“Salticidae (Araneae) genera of the world and species diversity – an atlas”
by J. Prószyński (1258 pages, 457 MB,
modified version of Salticidae Database 1995-2016 - designed for storage on
personal computers and in libraries) is now available for free loading from

“Salticidae (Araneae) genera of the
world and species diversity – an atlas” by J. Prószyński, 2020.
vol. 1 of the book (468 pages, 135 MB) documents diagnostic
characters of 641 Salticidae genera, each of them accessible in 1 second by
hyperlinks, or reached alternatively by slow scrolling of screen - which is
favoring comparison and understanding setup of similarities and differences
between genera. It proposes new arrangement of diversity of genera, aimed at
facilitation identifications of groups of genera. New INTRODUCTION chapter
explains easily setup of groups of genera and contains hyperlinks to chapters.
vol. 2 (790 pages, 350
MB) contains attachments documenting diversity of 4800 species (of genera shown
in vol. 1), based on revision of type specimens and on type species.
This work can serve as a verification source because brings together copies of
original diagnostic characters of type species, selected as the most practicable
during 60 years of revisionary research of J. Prószyński and used routinely by
leading specialists in taxonomy of Salticidae. It is submitted now as an aid for
arachnologists working on insufficiently known Salticidae faunae worldwide,
especially for preparation of identificatory keys, placement of new species and
genera, as well as verification of previously, or currently taken taxonomic
decision (including merging or splitting genera and checking synonymy).
As a treatise on taxonomy of Salticidae, it is unique by holistic approach to
diversity of genera and species, abstains from the current speculations on
formal phylogeny, the provided data have been kernels of taxonomic diagnoses of
Salticidae during 150 years span of their research history.
In difference to Simon, 1901-1903 which I used to consult frequently 120 years
after publication, the life of computer publications, too large for printing on
paper, is limited to duration of computer software used for their storage,
particularly relational databases.
“Salticidae (Araneae) genera of the world ..." collection of diagnostic drawings
of type specimens, rewritten as PDF, can serve Salticidae taxonomist also in the
more distant future, provided that at least a few copies, in personal computers,
will survive next improvements in computer software. Out of these
considerations, I appeal to arachnologists:
